The gutsy heroines more than hold their own when the going gets tough, which is why they’re such a great match.

Too Hard to Handle: Black Knights Inc. by Julie Anne Walker – Former Secret Service agent Penni DePaul met KNI operative Dan Currington in Malaysia during a mission that went horribly wrong, and the connection she felt was the only bright spot in that bloodbath. Determined to learn if Dan feels the same way, Penni tracks him down in Peru, where Dan is pursuing a CIA agent selling secrets. But when the job Dan is on suddenly heats up, both their lives are on the line. (The first in the Black Knights Inc. series is Hell on Wheels.)
The Unsung Hero (Troubleshooters)by Suzanne Brockmann – Yes, yes, the hero is another Navy SEAL, but who gets tired of SEALs? Plus, Brockmann deftly weaves two additional plotlines into this romantic thriller: a World War II story of friendship and broken hearts, and the budding love of two misfit teenagers. The Unsung Hero launches the marvelous Troubleshooters series that ranges across the globe as a tough group of Navy SEALs and their FBI counterparts take down bad guys and find their soul mates. If I could put this series on every one of my binge-read lists, I would.

10 Little Known Facts About Agatha Christie

1442254182-1442254182_goodreads_misc

Agatha Christie was born 125 years ago today! To celebrate, we’ve used our „little grey cells” to compile a list of fascinating facts about the beloved English crime novelist.

1. At the age of 26, she handled poisons for a living.
After working as a nurse during World War I, Christie became an apothecaries’ assistant, allowing her access to a myriad of toxins. „Since I was surrounded by poisons, perhaps it was natural that death by poisoning should be the method I selected,” she wrote of her decision to include strychnine and bromide in her first published novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

2. Christie did her best thinking while eating apples and drinking tea—in the bath.
Unfortunately, she found modern baths „too slippery, with no nice wooden ledge to rest pencils and paper on,” so she was forced to give up the stimulating habit.

3. She was one of the first British people to try surfing.
Christie got the opportunity on a trip to Hawaii with her first husband, Archie Christie. Already a bodyboarder, she took to the sport quite quickly: „I learned to become an expert, or at any rate expert from the European point of view—the moment of complete triumph on the day that I kept my balance and came right into shore standing upright on my board.”

4. During World War II, MI5 investigated Christie.
The culprit? Her 1941 mystery, N or M. The British intelligence agency was troubled by the novel’s inclusion of a character named Major Bletchley who claimed to possess critical wartime secrets. They worried Christie was actually referring to a real person, her friend Dilly Knox, a codebreaker at Bletchley Park. The novelist insisted the whole thing was a coincidence—”Bletchley? My dear, I was stuck there on my way by train from Oxford to London and took revenge by giving the name to one of my least lovable characters.”—and MI5 eventually dropped their investigation.

5. She despised marmalade pudding, going so far as to use it to kill a man in her 1953 novel, A Pocket Full of Rye.
Though, to be fair, the cause of death was taxine, an alkaloid poison. Marmalade was just the delivery method.

6. At the height of her popularity, Christie saw herself as a „sausage machine.”
She was producing two books per year at the point, and the exhausting schedule led her to declare, „I’m a sausage machine, a perfect sausage machine.”

7. She grew up believing her mother was psychic.
Christie always asserted her childhood had been „very happy,” and maybe Mama Clara’s second sight had something to do with it.

8. No one can confirm or deny that aliens abducted Christie in 1926.
The theory’s not as silly as you might think. (Though, admittedly, it’s one of the sillier ones). On December 3, 1926, the mystery writer kissed her daughter goodnight, got in a car, and disappeared for eleven days. Over 15,000 volunteers combed the area, but she couldn’t be found. Just as accusations of foul play began to circulate—primarily against her husband Archie—Christie turned up in a hotel in Harrogate, England. She never explained her disappearance.

9. On top of being a famous mystery writer, she was a successful romance novelist.
Christie wrote six romance novels under the pen name Mary Westmacott, including Unfinished Portrait, a semi-autobiographical story about a writer who attempts suicide after her marriage falls apart.

10. Christie has sold more books than there are people in China and America.
With 2 billion copies sold in 103 languages, she remains the best-selling novelist of all time.

Beginning in 2007, she played the character of Jenny Humphrey in The CW television series Gossip Girl, which is based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar. It was then announced that the actress would be scheduled for an indefinite hiatus from the show, which ultimately resulted in her leaving the series as a regular cast member, following the completion of the fourth season in 2011. Later that year, on August 16, 2011, Momsen told Elle magazine that she had quit acting to focus on her music career. However, on October 16, 2012, it was reported that Momsen and Connor Paolo, whose recurring role as Momsen’s stepbrother had also been significantly decreased following the fifth season, would be returning to Gossip Girlfor the final episode of the sixth and final season.

Momsen in concert in April 2010

Momsen has said that „music is where I can be me”, stating that „acting is easy. I’ve been doing it for so long and I totally love it. But you’re playing a character instead of yourself. Music is more personal because you’re writing it and you’re involved in every step of it.” At 5 years old, Momsen recorded the song „Christmas, Why Can’t I Find You?” for the soundtrack to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. In 2002, she recorded the songs „One Small Voice” and „Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” for the compilation album School’s Out! Christmas.

In March 2009, Momsen stated in an interview with OK! Magazine that her band The Pretty Reckless had signed a deal with Interscope Records. She played her first tour with her band opening for The Veronicas on their Revenge is Sweeter Tour in spring 2009. After the tour, Momsen began working with guitarist Ben Phillips, who would soon join the band. Momsen subsequently swapped out her former bandmates. She co-writes songs with Phillips; in addition to lead vocals, Momsen also plays rhythm guitar.

The band’s debut album Light Me Up was released on August 30, 2010 in the UK, where it debuted at number 6, as well as at number 18 in Ireland. The first single „Make Me Wanna Die” was released on May 30, 2010, where it peaked at number 16, while the second single „Miss Nothing” which was released on August 23, 2010 peaked at number 39. The third single released has been „Just Tonight„.

Television personality Heidi Montag recorded „Blackout”, a song written by Momsen. According to Momsen, she wrote the song when she was 8 years old and recorded it as a demo with a producer. Montag released the song as a digital only single, with the music video being directed by her husband Spencer Pratt. Momsen commented about the recording: „I’m like, okay, dude, you’re singing an 8-year-old’s words, but that’s cool. It’s so funny because I didn’t shop it or anything and I get this call going, ‘Did you write a song for Heidi Montag’? And I’m like, ‘What?'”. The track was later included on Montag’s debut studio album Superficial (2010).

On July 27, 2011, Momsen announced via Twitter that the band would be the supporting act for Evanescence during the fall of 2011. Throughout 2012, Momsen and her band toured North America; the second headlining tour, titled the Medicine Tour, began in March 2012  and culminated with supporting dates for Marilyn Manson‘s 2012 world tour Hey Cruel World… Tour. Momsen also appeared as guest vocalist on the first track of ex Ministry member Paul Barker‘s 2012 albumFix This.

On November 30, 2012, it was announced that The Pretty Reckless’ fourth single „Kill Me” would be released on December 11. The track was the last song to be featured in the Gossip Girl series finale. In June 2013, the band released a teaser of their upcoming album, Going to Hell.

April 2015, Momsen and The Pretty Reckless are currently on the „Carnival of Madness” Tour, opening up for headliner, Halestorm.

Never Back Down

images

Never Back Down (also known as The Fighters) is a 2008 action film starringSean Faris, Amber Heard, Cam Gigandet, and Djimon Hounsou. It was theatrically released on March 14, 2008. The film’s tagline is „Win or lose… Everyone has their fight”.

The film is rated PG-13 for „mature thematic material involving intense sequences of fighting/violence, partying, and language – all involving teens”. An unrated version called the „Extended Beat Down Edition”, featuring nudity and more blood, was released on DVD on July 29, 2008.

Plot

Jake Tyler (Sean Faris) has recently moved from Iowa to Orlando, Florida with his mother, Margret (Leslie Hope), and younger brother, Charlie (Wyatt Smith), to support Charlie’s shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city, he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler after an internet video of him starting a fight at one of his football games after a frustrated player from the opposing team taunted Jake about his father, who died in a drunk driving accident circulates around his new school.

Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja Miller (Amber Heard), Jake goes to a party where he is unwillingly pulled into a fight with the fighting MMA champion at the school, Ryan McCarthy (Cam Gigandet). Originally, Jake does not wish to fight until Ryan taunts him about his father who died while driving drunk with Jake in the car. Jake is brutally defeated in the fight, causing Jake to feel depressed. But a classmate, Max Cooperman (Evan Peters), who later becomes one of his best friends, introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport known asMixed Martial Arts. He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with Jean Roqua (Djimon Hounsou). It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather an art form he wants to master. Roqua agrees to take Jake as a pupil, but under the condition that Jake refrains from fighting outside of the gym which Jake agrees to, despite knowing he wishes to confront Ryan anyway. Baja attempts to apologize to Jake, but he does not sympathize with her and refuses to forgive her. Baja then confronts Ryan about the fight with Jake and proceeds to end their relationship when Ryan shows no remorse for the beating he gave him or his sadistic tendencies. Ryan begins to create a scene before the entire school but Jake tries to step in to defend Baja. After Ryan insults him again and leaves, Jake attends training with Roqua. Still angry about the incident, he is unable to calm down and train effectively. Roqua asks Jake to leave so that he could „cool off”.

After he and Max leave the gym, Jake gets into a brawl with a group of guys in a Hummer whom Jake easily disposes of while Max films. This video again circulates around the school raising Jake’s social status but agitating Ryan in the process. Ryan then proceeds to challenge Jake to compete in the Beatdown, an underground fighting tournament of which Ryan is the reigning champion. After having been banished from the gym by Roqua after his fight is discovered, Jake begs for forgiveness saying his anger is quelled when he is training with Roqua. Roqua agrees to allow Jake to train at his gym again, but does not take it easy on him anymore. He then prepares to compete in the Beatdown. Jake apologizes to Baja for not listening when she first apologized and the two proceed to begin a relationship. While training with Roqua, Jake inquires why he lives in the gym. Jake discovers that Roqua is from Senegal and he is in exile because he believes he is the reason his brother, Joseph the favorite son, was killed and his father had disowned him for.

Upon hearing that Jake has decided not to compete in the Beatdown, Ryan invites Max to hang out at his house; there he begins to spar with Max before brutally assaulting him and leaving him at Jake’s door. Jake and Baja take Max to the hospital where Jake decides to fight. Despite Baja’s pleas against his decision, he states that doing nothing has consequences. Before he goes to the tournament, he has a brief argument with Roqua about his decision to fight. Roqua eventually assents and tells him to „control the outcome” of the fight. Jake arrives at the tournament where it is about to begin. After a mix-up where Jake and Ryan almost fight in the first round, they both proceed to make their way through each fight. Jake makes it to the semifinals in spite of an injury he received in the previous match due to a kick to the ribs. While Jake is recovering after the match, Baja sees him and tells him that she finally understands that Jake is fighting „so [he doesn’t] have to fight again”. After learning that Ryan was disqualified in his semifinal match, Jake forfeits, seeing no reason to continue. While he and Baja attempt to leave, Ryan confronts him and the two finally fight outside in the parking lot. Jake is still limited by his ribs, and Ryan at first gains the upper hand, applying a choke on Jake. However Jake escapes and, with the entire crowd watching, knocks out Ryan using one of the first combinations Roqua taught him.

The next day, a visibly injured Max has been released from the hospital. Jake has won the respect of his fellow students, including Ryan, and Roqua closes the gym with a ticket to Brazil, signaling his intention to reconcile with his father.

Critical response

The film was met with mostly negative reviews, earning a score of 22% on Rotten Tomatoes; the consensus being: „Though not without its pleasures, Never Back Down faithfully adheres to every imaginable fight movie cliché”. Gregory Kirschling of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a D, calling it „dopey. And with its emphasis on stupid violence, xylophone abs, and getting yourself on YouTube, it’s yet another product that makes you feel bad about today’s youth culture.” Michael Phillips of Chicago Tribune gave the film two out of four stars, saying, „[i]t’s a little Karate Kid, a smidge of Fight Club (with none of the ironic ambivalence toward violence that David Fincher brought to that story), a lot of The O.C. (evil boy Gigandet played an evil boy on that series), and presto: probable hit”.

Serial „Supernatural”

Supernatural is an American television series created by Eric Kripke. It was first broadcast on September 13, 2005, on The WB and subsequently became part of successor The CW‘s lineup. Starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, the series follows the two brothers as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings in the world. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision. Along with Kripke, executive producers have been McG, Robert Singer, Phil Sgriccia, Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, John Shiban, Ben Edlund and Adam Glass. Former executive producer and director Kim Manners died of lung cancer during production of the fourth season.

The series is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia and surrounding areas and was in development for nearly ten years, as creator Kripke spent several years unsuccessfully pitching it. The pilot was viewed by an estimated 5.69 million viewers, and the ratings of the first four episodes prompted The WB to pick up the series for a full season. Originally, Kripke planned the series for three seasons but later expanded it to five. The fifth season concluded the series’ main storyline, and Kripke departed the series as showrunner. The series has continued on for several more seasons with Sera Gamble and Jeremy Carver assuming the role of showrunner. The series is currently airing its tenth season, and in January 2015, The CW renewed it for an eleventh season.

Effects

Though companies were hired for work on the pilot episode—such as Entity FX for the visual effects—effects departments now work exclusively for the series. Ivan Hayden is the visual effects supervisor, and works with many levels of the production staff. During pre-production, Hayden must go through the scripts, looking for possible visual effects. He then has a concept meeting with the writers, and after settling on the effect designs to use, coordinates with the special effects and stunt departments. Hayden is also present during filming to help the director make sure that the scenes are being filmed in the best way for the visual effects, such as by ensuring that the actors are looking at the correct location where an effect will later be added. Afterward, he then meets with the editors. Another aspect of the visual effects department is coming up with rules and physics for each supernatural creature, though the rules are often bent if it benefits the story. In 2012, it was announced that Hayden will be working at the new Vancouver location of Encore for its VFX division.

Music

Supernatural features a synthesized orchestral score, although traditional acoustic instruments such as guitars and cellos are used at times. Special instruments have also been used in specific episodes, such as „bluesy gospel music” played on a broken-down piano in the faith-healing episode „Faith”. Unlike other television shows, the series features two composers:Christopher Lennertz and Jay Gruska.[39] Each composer scores every other episode, giving them extra time to write the scores, which usually end up being around 30 minutes per episode. They write themes for their own episodes and characters and work with one another if there is overlap between episodes. They try to base the music on the visuals of the episode, such as in the episode „Dead in the Water”, in which off-angle shots are accompanied by repetitive and discordant notes, and spoken words such as „water” and „die” are followed by a lower pitch to create a „gurgly” sound.[40] While there are similarities in the scores for situations such as the brothers and their father, about a third of each episode’s score is newly written for the series.[39]

While original scores are used throughout episodes, another important aspect of the series’ music is the use of classic rock, over which creator Eric Kripke threatened to quit when the network would not allow its inclusion. Most of the songs are from Kripke’s private collection, although one of his favorite bands—Led Zeppelin—is too expensive to use. Some episode titles are references to Led Zeppelin songs. The series has featured such bands as Blue Öyster Cult, Bad Company, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rush, Boston, Triumph and AC/DC on more than one occasion. Multiple songs are usually used throughout each episode, and accompany „The Road So Far” sequences before select episodes that highlight a montage of past events. Although Kripke prefers to keep a fine line between the score and songs used, sometimes Lennertz and Gruska are required to write short sections of rock-like music to fill 15-to-20-second gaps, as it would be too costly to acquire song rights. Usually on the last episode of every season, the song „Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas is played at the beginning.

Mouvie „If I Stay”

Plot

Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her family are getting ready to go on with their normal day activities when it is announced on the radio that school has been cancelled. Mia’s dad Denny (Joshua Leonard) is a teacher and as a result of the snow day does not have to go to work. Mia’s mom Kat (Mireille Enos), a travel agent, decides to call in sick and along with her family visit Mia’s grandparents who live on a farm. It is also revealed that Mia is dating an older, popular up-and-coming rock-star named Adam Wilde (Jamie Blackley).

The story flashes back to Mia’s early life with a rocker dad and an inexperienced mom; one day they take Mia to a music class where Mia decides that she wants to start playing the cello. After her parents see that Mia is passionate about the cello they hire a teacher to help her play. Kat is shown pregnant with Teddy (Jakob Davies) whom Mia thinks is the reason for her father’s departure from his band.

Years later, an adolescent Mia is still passionate about the cello and is playing at school in the band room where Adam peeks in on her playing, seeing her for the first time, leading him to ask Kim (Liana Liberato), Mia’s best friend, about her. Adam then asks Mia out on a date to a cello recital, where they show mutual affection towards one another.

The story flashes back to current time with the family driving to the grandparents’ farm when their car collides with an oncoming truck. Mia appears to have an out-of-body experience and sees her body lying on the road while paramedics are trying to help her and her family. Mia tries to ask a paramedic what is happening, but realizes that no one can see or hear her. Mia, now in the hospital, panics as she does not know the current status of any of her family members when they take her in for surgery. A sympathetic nurse (Aisha Hinds) tells Mia that it is up to her whether or not she wants to stay.

The story flashes back once again to Mia attending one of Adam’s concerts with his band Willamette Stone, where she doesn’t seem to fit in. Adam’s band is steadily gaining more recognition and gets signed to a label, which starts to put a strain on their relationship due to the travel schedule. While at dinner, Mia’s Grandpa suggests that she should apply toJuilliard, an idea which she initially rebuffs, but later further researches. She eventually lands an audition in San Francisco. It takes a while for Mia to tell Adam about her audition and when she does he becomes upset and leaves for a week long gig.

In the present day, Mia undergoes surgery. She sees a doctor speaking with her grandparents who are standing outside of a pediatric room where Teddy lays in a coma-like state. Adam comes to the hospital to see Mia, but is not allowed in as he is not an immediate family member. It is then revealed that Mia’s mom Kat was pronounced dead on arrival, and her dad Denny died on the operating table. She later finds out that Teddy has died from a epidural hematoma. Grandpa talks to Mia, revealing that her father gave up being in a band because he wanted to give her a better life and be a better father. He also, tearfully, gives Mia permission to move on from this life if she wants, which influences Mia to decide that she wants to die so that she can join her family on the other side.

The story flashes back to Mia at her audition for Juilliard, where she plays the best she has ever played, leading her to think that if accepted she will go. After a reconciliation with Adam, they talk about the huge possibility of her going to Juilliard, which ultimately leads to them breaking up and going their separate ways.

After some time, Mia seems stable enough to receive more visitors. Mia is shown symbolically about to let go when she hears the music performed at the cello recital that she attended with Adam. It is revealed that Adam has come to see Mia and that he is playing his iPod for her. He brings with him a letter Mia has received from Juilliard saying that she has been accepted, and lets her know that he will do whatever she wants if she stays. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 36%, based on 118 reviews.
